Say you know how to code and have built a few projects. A company may still offer you a package of ₹4 lakh a year. Meanwhile, another engineer who has picked up one specialised skill alongside coding, such as AI, Cloud, Data or Security, can earn ₹20 to 30 lakh or more in the same market.
In this article we have picked five careers. We did not rank them on salary alone, because the highest salary and the best option are not always the same thing. While ranking, we weighed these five points:
- How much demand the field has today
- How much room there is to grow
- How easy or hard it is for a fresher to get in
- How much AI will affect the job
- How many real jobs exist in India
AI Engineers get the most buzz in 2026, yet AI is not number one on our list. You will see why further down.
Fresher to senior: annual package range
5Full-Stack Developer
A Full-Stack Developer works on both the Frontend and Backend of a website or app. Everything from what you see on screen to the logic, APIs and databases running behind it falls under this role. If you started coding recently, this is probably where you began too, which is why it sits at number five.
The best thing about it is that freshers get a first chance here. Almost every startup needs developers for its site or app, so internships and junior jobs are easy to find.
| Experience / Company | Annual package |
|---|---|
| Fresher at a large IT company | 3.5 to 6 lakh |
| Strong candidate at a good product startup | 8 to 14 lakh |
| 3 to 5 years of experience | 15 to 25 lakh |
| Experience handling large systems | 35 lakh+ |
But HTML, CSS, a little JavaScript and React or MERN alone will not land a high-salary job. These skills are common now, and AI tools easily build basic UIs, simple APIs and CRUD apps. To move ahead, build a strong grip on these:
- Deploying apps on the Cloud
- Designing databases properly
- Connecting different APIs
- Understanding Authentication and Security
- System Design, as you gain experience
If you want to get into this field seriously, try Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js (or Java Spring Boot), PostgreSQL and Docker. Full-Stack is still a dependable way into the industry quickly. But remember, getting a first job is one thing and reaching a good salary is another. For that you need skills beyond basic web development.
4Application Security Engineer
Developers build apps, and an Application Security Engineer examines them through an attacker's eyes. Say an app has a SQL Injection or weak Authentication problem. This engineer catches it and tells the development team what the problem is, where it is and how to fix it. That is why security knowledge alone is not enough; you need a good grasp of programming too.
| Experience | Annual package |
|---|---|
| Fresher | 6 to 10 lakh |
| 3 to 5 years of experience | 18 to 28 lakh |
| Average for an experienced professional | About 28 lakh |
| Senior level | 45 to 70 lakh |
To find flaws in other people's code, your own coding and security foundations must be strong first. The practical route is to gain experience in SOC Analyst, QA or Testing roles and then move toward Application Security. A 30-day course does not make anyone a hacker. You need a real understanding of Networking, Operating Systems and Security.
3DevOps / Cloud Engineer
Writing code is the developer's job, but getting it to users without interruption, setting up servers, deploying updates without breaking the system, and adding capacity when users suddenly surge is all handled by DevOps and Cloud Engineers. DevOps does not just mean running AWS. Along with Linux and Scripting, these tools are essential:
- Terraform: Manages infrastructure through code.
- Kubernetes: Manages Containers in large apps.
- CI/CD Pipelines: Automate testing and deployment of new code.
- Docker: Packages an app into Containers.
| Experience | Annual package |
|---|---|
| Fresher | 5 to 9 lakh |
| 3 to 5 years of experience | 18 to 35 lakh |
| Senior role | 60 to 90 lakh+ |
A big reason in India is GCCs (Global Capability Centers). Companies like Target, JP Morgan and Walmart Global Tech need engineers to run their large Cloud infrastructure, so experienced DevOps, SRE and Platform Engineers get good packages. One small mistake can take down an app used by millions, so companies do not let freshers work alone on Production systems. It is better to first gain experience in an Engineering role like Backend or Support and then move into DevOps.
2AI/ML Engineer
An AI/ML Engineer's real job is not just building apps with AI tools, but running Machine Learning Models inside real products. Say a model catches fraudulent Transactions. The engineer trains it, connects it to the app, deploys it to Production and keeps it running reliably at scale. After Generative AI, companies are building their own AI Assistants using LLMs, RAG, Vector Databases and Open-Source Models.
| Experience | Annual package |
|---|---|
| Fresher | 5 to 8 lakh |
| Strong GenAI skills, at a product company | 12 to 18 lakh |
| 3 to 5 years of experience | 25 to 45 lakh |
| Certain special senior roles | 70 lakh to 1 crore+ |
But a high salary does not mean easy entry. Along with Python you need Machine Learning, Statistics, Linear Algebra, PyTorch or TensorFlow, Model Deployment and MLOps. Fresher jobs that are purely AI/ML are still fewer than in general Software Development. Thinking that any GenAI course will turn you into an AI Engineer is a misconception; you have to put in time on the Fundamentals.
So why is it not number one? Because here we also looked at entry opportunities and stability along with salary, and on that scale someone else took first place.
1Data Engineer
If AI is a fast car, good data is its fuel. A Data Engineer builds a system that collects Raw data scattered across different apps, cleans it, and delivers it in the right format to a Data Warehouse so that Data Scientists, Analysts and AI Systems can use it. In other words, it is not just analysing data but building and maintaining the entire Data Infrastructure.
- SQL: One of the most essential skills, because datasets are huge.
- Python or Scala: For building Data Pipelines.
- Spark, Kafka, Airflow, Databricks, Snowflake: When the data gets very large.
| Experience / Company | Annual package |
|---|---|
| Fresher | 4 to 8 lakh |
| At a good product startup | Up to 10 lakh |
| 3 to 5 years of experience | 15 to 25 lakh |
| Senior at large GCCs and tech companies | 40 to 60 lakh+ |
In some roles the top salary can be lower than AI/ML, but number one is because of its balance. Compared with AI/ML, entry routes are easier, especially if you have a good grip on SQL and Python. Almost every industry needs Data Infrastructure, and the more AI is used, the more good data will be needed.
What is changing in the age of AI
Writing code is only one part of Software Engineering. Understanding the problem, designing Architecture, choosing the right options, fixing Bugs, handling Failures and deciding what actually to build is the real engineering, and AI does not make these disappear on its own. When everyone can build an app over a weekend, the difference will be whether your app runs well at scale.
So there is no need to leave Software Engineering because of AI. Learn DSA, System Design, Backend and Databases, then add AI on top. Here are four more areas whose importance may grow with AI:
- AI Product Engineering: Connecting the ChatGPT API is something almost every developer can do today. The real value lies with the person who can shape an AI model into a product people use every day, like an AI Receptionist that answers phone calls or a Coding Agent that reads an entire Codebase.
- AI Security: Say you have given an AI Agent access to your email, database and Cloud. If an attacker takes control of it, how big would the damage be? Demand for security professionals who handle such risks will grow in the coming years.
- AI Infrastructure: AI Workloads and GPUs are expensive. An engineer who can run AI Systems fast, reliably and at low cost will become more valuable.
- Robotics and Edge AI: In the next wave, AI may step out of the screen into Robots, Drones, cars and Medical Devices. This needs both Software and Hardware, which makes it work that is not easily automated.
Which career is right for you
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| To get into the industry quickly, building websites and apps | Full-Stack |
| To find weaknesses in software | App Security |
| Servers, Automation and Cloud | DevOps |
| Depth in Maths, Statistics and AI | AI/ML |
| A balance of salary and entry | Data Engineering |
Do not try to learn every field at once. You end up knowing a little of everything but with no depth in any. Pick one path and commit to it.
If you are in college: what to do in the next six months
Do not spend the next six months buying courses; spend them finishing one project. Pick a problem that bothers the people around you. Build a Backend and Database for it, Deploy it and put it on GitHub. Once people start using it, keep improving it with their feedback. Companies are less impressed by certificates and more by a product that 500 people use every day.
Frequently asked questions
