How do you stand out from the crowd? ๐ค
According to AICTE, since 2021 about 45% of engineering admissions have gone to CS or related branches. In other words, CS students are everywhere.
Now think about it: when so many people enter the same field, will everyone get the job they want? No. Some won't get the job they wanted, and some won't get a job at all.
So what is the way to stand out from the crowd? The answer is GATE Computer Science. This is the opportunity that can take you to a different level.
What exactly is GATE? ๐
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted jointly by IISc and 7 older IITs: Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati. One institute conducts the exam each year on a rotating basis. For example, GATE 2025 was conducted by IIT Roorkee.
The exam is held once a year in February. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras and will be held on three weekends: 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21 February 2027, in two sessions each day.
Exam Pattern: ๐
- 100 marks in total, 65 questions, 3 hours
- That means about 3 minutes per question on average. The questions are of a fairly high level, so the more you practice and revise, the faster you get.
- 15 marks for General Aptitude (10 questions)
- 85 marks for the CS syllabus. Engineering Maths and Discrete Maths are included in this.
- 30 questions of 1 mark and 35 questions of 2 marks (30 + 70 = 100)
Three types of questions
Multiple Choice Question
Four options, one correct. Pick the right one and you get full marks.
โ Negative marking: โ1/3 for 1 mark, โ2/3 for 2 marksNumerical Answer Type
No options. You type the number directly, which can be positive, negative or even a decimal.
โ No negative markingMultiple Select Question
One or more options can be correct. You get full marks only if you select all the correct ones.
โ No negative markingNAT tip: Attempt every NAT. If it's right you get the marks, and if it's wrong you'd have got zero anyway. Nothing to lose.
Be careful with MSQ: If you miss even one correct option, or tick even one wrong option, you get zero for that question. That's why MSQs are the most challenging.
The truth: CS has the most MSQs. Everyone can reach 40-50-60 marks, but it's the MSQs that take you to 80-90. No trick or strategy works for them. Only deep conceptual clarity works.
Who can take GATE? ๐
- B.E./B.Tech, B.Sc, B.Com, BA, MBBS, M.Sc, MCA, BCA, B.Pharma, B.Arch graduates; any degree works
- Whether you are in the third year, the fourth year, or already passed out, you are eligible
- There is no age limit
- You can take the exam even after the 5th semester
Note: Eligibility to take GATE is one thing, and eligibility for M.Tech admission is another. Most colleges ask for a 4-year degree. If you have done a 3-year BSc/BCom/BA, you may have to do a 2-year course like MSc/MS first. Some colleges take only BE/BTech students, and some also take MSc/MCA students. So check each college's portal yourself.
Why GATE? One exam, many benefits ๐ฅ
M.Tech from IIT / IISc / NIT
A chance to study at top colleges, plus the option of a research-oriented M.Tech/MS.
Direct Ph.D. (after B.Tech)
With a good score, you can do a PhD directly without an M.Tech, and with a stipend too.
โน12,400 monthly stipend
If you take M.Tech admission through a GATE score, you get a stipend. It can cover both your college fees and pocket money.
Direct recruitment in PSUs
Many PSUs call you for an interview directly on your GATE score, with no separate written test.
Government organisations
Places like CSIR offer opportunities through GATE.
Management courses
IISc's management course is considered to have great ROI, since the fees are much lower than IIMs.
Study abroad
A GATE score is also accepted for M.Tech/MS in Singapore, Germany and Switzerland.
Placement prep alongside
DSA, OS, DBMS, CN are exactly what companies ask. Just add coding practice.
Better college marks too
Start from the second year. The 2nd-3rd year subjects in college are almost the same as what comes in GATE.
Reality check for CS students: Most core PSUs (like ONGC, IOCL, NTPC, BHEL) have very few CS posts. The biggest PSU advantage goes to core branches like Mechanical, Electrical and Civil. The real game for CS students is IIT M.Tech + top placements + research.
How many marks from which subject? ๐
This is roughly the average of the last 10-12 years.
Smart tip: Compiler Design gives only 3-5 marks, so don't spend 200-250 hours on it. Our goal is to score as high as possible in GATE. The more effort, the more ROI; divide your time accordingly.
Where to start preparing? 3-Level Roadmap ๐บ๏ธ
The biggest mistake is jumping straight into a hard subject. Then nothing makes sense and motivation breaks. So start with the easier subjects that have no prerequisites.
๐ข Level 1: No prerequisites (start here)
You can start with any of these subjects, because you don't need to have studied anything before them.
๐ก Level 2
Study DS only after C Programming. Study COA after Digital Logic, because it makes heavy use of Digital Logic.
๐ด Level 3
If you start OS after finishing COA, a lot of things become clear and easy to understand.
TOC and Compiler Design: You can take these anytime in Level 2-3, but do TOC first, then Compiler Design.
The reality of selection ๐ฏ
Just qualifying doesn't get you a seat. For a good college or job, you need a score well above the cut-off.
Every year around 8-10 lakh students fill the form, and real selection happens only for the top 4-5%. So half-hearted preparation won't work.
Future Scope: Where will you go after M.Tech? ๐ฎ
After an M.Tech from a top college, you can go into these specialisations:
Cyber Security isn't going anywhere. The more the internet grows, the more hi-tech hackers become, and the demand for engineers who protect data from them will grow too.
For students from tier-2 or tier-3 colleges where placements are weak, doing an M.Tech at a top college through GATE and reaching roles like AI/ML Engineer is a very strong path.

Start today, because the sooner you start, the sooner you'll arrive.
Frequently Asked Questions โ
Do you get a stipend with a GATE score at NITs or private colleges too?
Yes. If you took M.Tech admission on the basis of a GATE score, you get a stipend at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government and AICTE-approved colleges too.
What's the difference between Integrated PhD and Regular PhD?
A Regular PhD usually comes after M.Tech. An Integrated (Direct) PhD is done directly after B.Tech.
Will a 2-year gap affect placements?
If you have done your M.Tech from a good college, a gap after graduation usually doesn't matter.
Can you take GATE after the 5th semester?
Yes, absolutely. And since the result is valid for 3 years, if you score well in the third year, you can use it for admission anytime in the next 3 years.
What strategy works for MSQs?
There is no shortcut. Only deep conceptual understanding works in MSQs, so instead of rote learning, understand every topic from the root.
